What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link: utm_source says where the link was posted, utm_medium says how, and utm_campaign says why. When someone clicks the link, analytics tools such as Google Analytics record those three answers next to the visit, so you can see that 40 visits came from your Instagram story in the Ramadan offer and only 3 from the newsletter.

Use the same spelling every time. Analytics treats Instagram, instagram and ig as three different sources, which is why this tool can write your names in lower case with underscores for you.

How to build a tracked link

  1. Paste the page you want people to land on.
  2. Pick where you will post it (the preset fills in source and medium), or type your own.
  3. Name the campaign, for example ramadan_offer. Add content if you run two links in the same place, such as story_link and bio_link.
  4. Copy the finished link and use it in your post, bio, email or QR code. Save it on this device to find it again.

Questions people ask

Which UTM parameters do I need?

Source, medium and campaign are the three every tracked link should have. Term (for paid search keywords) and content (to tell two links apart) are optional.

Does adding UTM tags change the page?

No. Visitors see the same page. The tags only travel in the address and are read by your analytics.

Should I use UTM tags on links inside my own website?

No. Tagging links between your own pages can overwrite the real source of a visit. Use them for links you post elsewhere.

Why lower case?

Analytics tools are case sensitive, so Spring_Sale and spring_sale are counted as different campaigns. One spelling keeps your reports clean.

Can I turn the tracked link into a QR code?

Yes. Copy the link, open the free QR code generator and paste it there. Scans from a printed code will then show up under your campaign.
