What are meta tags?
Meta tags are lines of HTML in the head of a web page that tell search engines and social apps how to present it. The title and description are what people see in Google results. The Open Graph and Twitter tags decide the picture, title and text of the preview card when someone shares your link in WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn or X.
Keep titles to about 60 characters and descriptions to about 155 or 160, because longer ones are cut. A clear title, a one-sentence promise in the description and a 1200 x 630 pixel preview image are the three things that most improve how a shared page looks.
How to create meta tags for a page
- Write the page title and the description. Watch the bars: they turn red when the text is longer than search results usually show.
- Add the page address and the address of a 1200 x 630 pixel preview image on your site.
- Choose the type of page and whether search engines should show it.
- Copy the tags and paste them inside the head of your page.
Questions people ask
How long should a title tag be?
About 60 characters or fewer. Google cuts titles by width rather than by count, so short, clear titles are the safest.
How long should a meta description be?
Around 155 to 160 characters. It does not change your ranking directly, but a clear description makes more people click.
What size should the preview image be?
1200 x 630 pixels, about 1.91 to 1, is accepted by Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X. Use the free image resizer to prepare it.
What is a canonical link?
It tells search engines which address is the main one for a page, so that copies with extra tags in the address are not treated as separate pages.
Do I have to use all the tags?
No. The title, description and Open Graph image matter most. Leave the others empty and they are left out.
