What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable last part of a web address, like how-to-grow-your-cafe in artso.ai/blog/how-to-grow-your-cafe. A good slug is short, uses lower case, joins words with hyphens and keeps the words people would search for.

This tool removes accents from Latin letters, drops symbols, and can leave out small words such as the and of to keep the slug short. Websites in Arabic can keep Arabic letters in the slug; choose to drop them if your system needs plain Latin.

How to make a slug

  1. Type or paste the title of your page.
  2. Choose hyphens or underscores, and whether to keep Arabic letters and drop small words.
  3. Set a maximum length if your system has one, then copy the slug.

Questions people ask

Hyphens or underscores in a URL?

Hyphens. Search engines read a hyphen as a space between words, so your words are understood separately.

How long should a slug be?

Short: three to five words is plenty. Shorter slugs are easier to read, share and remember.

Can a URL slug be in Arabic?

Yes, modern browsers and search engines handle Arabic addresses. When shared, the letters may appear as percent codes in some apps, so many sites prefer Latin slugs.

Should I change a slug after the page is published?

Avoid it. A new address breaks old links unless you set up a redirect from the old one.
