What does a word counter measure?
A word counter counts the words in a text and a few things that go with it: characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and how long it takes to read or say aloud. Reading time uses 200 words a minute and speaking time 130, which are common averages.
Writers use it to stay inside an essay limit; marketers use it to fit a caption, a bio or a headline. The bars below show how much of each platform's limit your text uses. Arabic and other languages are counted the same way, by words separated by spaces.
How to count the words in a text
- Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update as you go.
- Read the words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time at the top.
- Check the bars to see how your text fits X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, SMS and Google results. A red bar means it is over the limit.
- Look at the repeated words to spot ones you use too often.
Questions people ask
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
An Instagram caption can have up to 2,200 characters, and the first line or two are what show before people tap more. A bio can have 150 characters.
How long can a post on X be?
280 characters for a standard post. X counts every link as 23 characters, and counts some emoji and characters from some scripts as two, so its own counter can differ from this one.
How is reading time worked out?
By dividing the number of words by 200, a common reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 130 words a minute.
Does it count Arabic text?
Yes. Words are counted by the spaces between them, and punctuation such as the Arabic question mark ends a sentence.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The text stays in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
