Free video trimmer

Choose a video, set where it should start and end, and download just that part as an MP4. Cuts can be exact to the frame, and nothing is uploaded.

Free, no sign-up. It runs in your browser: your files and text never leave your device.

How trimming a video works

Trimming keeps one stretch of a video and throws the rest away. It is the quickest way to cut the dead air off the start of a recording, pull one moment out of a long clip, or fit a video under a length limit.

A video is stored as a few full pictures, called keyframes, with the frames in between described as changes from them. A Fast cut copies the video without re-encoding, which takes seconds, but it can only start at a keyframe, so it may begin a moment earlier than you chose. An Exact cut decodes and re-encodes the video so the first frame is the one you picked; it takes longer and is the better choice for short, precise clips.

How to trim a video

  1. Choose your video. It plays in the preview and is not uploaded.
  2. Set the start and the end by typing times such as 0:12.5, or with the sliders. While the video plays, press Start here and End here to use the current moment.
  3. Choose Exact or Fast, then press Trim the video.
  4. Play the result and download the MP4.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Exact and Fast?

Fast copies the video without re-encoding, so it is very quick, but it can only cut at a keyframe and may start a little early. Exact re-encodes so the cut is on the frame you chose, and takes longer.

Does trimming reduce the quality?

Fast does not change the quality at all. Exact re-encodes at a high bitrate, so any loss is small, but it is not zero.

How do I cut the middle out of a video?

Trim the first part and the last part separately and join them in a video editor. This tool keeps one continuous piece.

What format is the trimmed video?

An MP4. Fast mode keeps the original codecs; Exact mode makes H.264 video and AAC sound.

Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Edge and Safari (on a computer or a recent phone) can make MP4 video. Firefox support depends on its version. If your browser cannot, the page tells you instead of failing silently.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. The video is never sent to a server, so it also works for private clips.
