Choose a video and a target such as WhatsApp or email, and get a smaller MP4 with the picture and sound kept as good as the size allows. It all happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Free, no sign-up. It runs in your browser: your files and text never leave your device.

How video compression works

A video file is big because of its bitrate: how many bits it spends on each second. Compression lowers the bitrate and, if needed, the size of the picture, so the file shrinks while it still looks fine on a phone. A 1080p clip straight from a phone is often 10 to 20 MB for every 10 seconds; at 720p and a modest bitrate it can be a fifth of that.

The size targets do the sums for you. WhatsApp has long limited videos sent as media to about 16 MB (bigger files can be sent as documents), and Gmail's attachment limit is 25 MB. The tool works out the bitrate that fits the length of your clip and picks a picture size to match. A longer clip needs a lower quality to fit, so for very long videos trimming first helps most. The result is an H.264 and AAC MP4, which plays almost everywhere.

How to compress a video

  1. Choose your video, or drop it on the box. It is read on your device and not uploaded.
  2. Pick what it is for: WhatsApp, email, a small file, balanced 720p or high quality 1080p. The page shows the picture size and the file size to expect.
  3. Press Make it smaller and wait for the bar to finish. Keep the tab open; a phone may need the screen on.
  4. Play the result, check the sizes before and after, and download the MP4.

Questions people ask

How do I compress a video for WhatsApp?

Choose the WhatsApp target. It sets the bitrate and picture size so the file comes out under about 16 MB for your clip's length. Very long clips cannot fit at a watchable quality: trim them first.

Will compressing make the video look worse?

A little, because the file uses fewer bits. For videos watched on a phone, 720p at a moderate bitrate looks very close to the original. Choose High quality to keep full HD.

Can it make a video bigger by mistake?

It never makes the picture larger than the original. If your video was already small the result can be a similar size, and the page tells you.

What format is the result?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on phones, computers, social apps and smart TVs.

Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Edge and Safari (on a computer or a recent phone) can make MP4 video. Firefox support depends on its version. If your browser cannot, the page tells you instead of failing silently.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. The video is never sent to a server, so it also works for private clips.
