How VAT is calculated in the UAE
The standard rate of VAT in the UAE is 5% and has been since it started on 1 January 2018. To add VAT, multiply the price by 1.05. To take it out of a price that already includes it, divide the total by 1.05; the difference is the VAT. Taking 5% off the total is not the same thing and gives a slightly wrong answer, which is the most common mistake.
Some supplies are zero-rated, such as exports, and some are exempt, such as residential rent. Businesses must register once their taxable supplies pass the threshold set by the Federal Tax Authority, and registered businesses show their tax registration number (TRN) on tax invoices. This calculator does the sums; check the FTA for how your sales are treated.
