How discounts are calculated

A discount of 25% on 200 takes off 25% of 200, which is 50, leaving 150. The same sum can be done in one step by multiplying the price by 0.75.

Two discounts in a row are not added together. 20% off and then a further 10% off the reduced price is a total of 28% off, because the second discount applies to a smaller number. Remember this when a shop says extra 10% off sale prices.

How to calculate a discount

  1. Type the original price.
  2. Type the discount percentage, and a second one if there is one.
  3. Read the final price, what you save and the total percentage off.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the price by the discount divided by 100 to get the saving, and subtract it. For 25% off 200: 200 x 0.25 = 50, so the price is 150.

What is 20% off and then 10% off?

28% off in total, because the second discount is taken from the already reduced price, not from the original.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount. If 150 is the price after 25% off, the original was 150 / 0.75 = 200.

Does the sale price include VAT?

This tool works on whatever price you type. If your price includes VAT, the discount applies to the total, and the VAT inside it shrinks in the same proportion.
